Kimberly Sogi is the program manager of the Immunotherapeutics and Vaccine Research Initiative (IVRI). The IVRI was established in 2016 to promote interactions and collaborations between immunologist, microbiologist and oncologist from academia and industry to accelerate breakthrough discoveries and immunotherapies for treating and preventing cancer, infectious disease, and autoimmune disease. The initiative was founded on the principle that research that uncovers how the immune system controls infectious disease yields new approaches for treating cancer, and conversely, that studies of cancer immunology yield approaches for vaccines and therapies targeting infectious disease. Kim received her BA in Chemistry from Barnard College in New York City. She earned her PhD in Carolyn Bertozzi’s lab from UC Berkeley. She transitioned to studying microbiology and immunology as a post-doctoral researcher in Sarah Stanley’s lab in the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. Now as the program manager of the IVRI, she is managing the collaborations between UC Berkeley scientists and industry sponsors. In addition to attending group meetings and working with scientists, she enjoys gardening, knitting, travel, being outdoors, and fly fishing.
