Alliance Partner Institutions and Programs
The Alliance selects partners that combine a need for capacity-building support with the presence of a basic scientific and research infrastructure to allow participation in research. Another key criteria is the presence of a strong, well-established partnerships with one or more UC Berkeley faculty that provides a foundation for cooperation.

Makerere University
Makerere University is Uganda's largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning, established in 1922. Located in the capital, Kampala, it became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programs for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.

University of Zimbabwe
The University of Zimbabwe is the largest and oldest university in Zimbabwe. Founded in 1955 as the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, it was renamed at independence in 1980. In 2001, the university served over 10,000 students. However, the ensuing political and economic crises lead to a downturn in funding, staffing, and students, culminating in the closure of the university in 2008. The university has since reopened and is in the process of rebuilding. The institution has approximately 750 faculty, 11,500 undergraduates, 1,500 post-graduate students. The main campus is in the Mount Pleasant suburb in northern Harare.
