Chen is a UC Berkeley alumnus and entrepreneur with a focus on connecting China and the United States through science and technology. He is the founder of ELEM biotech, a pre-clinical biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing novel vaccines and treatments for cancers and infectious disease. Chen obtained his Graduate training at Texas A&M University in the laboratory of Dr. James Samuel, studying the pathogenesis and immune responses of Gram-negative intracellular bacteria Coxiella burnetii. He completed his post-doctoral training with Dr. Daniel Portnoy at UCB, focusing on the cell biology of intracellular pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, identifying key virulence mechanisms. Chen also has extensive experience with biomarker/antigen discovery and vaccine development, and participated in several NIH and DOD-sponsored initiatives for immune epitopes identification and subunit vaccine development against a variety of pathogens and cancers. Chen is passionate about fostering a collaborative effort between industry and academia to explore novel and effective treatment for neglected and emerging diseases.
